Ondokuz Mayıs University School of Foreign Languages
Established in 1997, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) is an academic unit dedicated to enhancing students' foreign language proficiency, enabling them to use languages effectively in their academic and professional lives, and preparing them to communicate confidently in an increasingly multilingual and multicultural world.
The School offers foreign language instruction and preparatory programmes in English, German, and French. Our educational programmes focus not only on developing students' grammatical knowledge and vocabulary but also on fostering the integrated development of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Our Educational Approach
At the School of Foreign Languages, we design our teaching and learning processes in alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and adopt a student-centred, communicative, and skills-based approach to language education. Our primary aim is to equip students with the confidence and competence to use the foreign languages they learn effectively in their academic, social, and professional lives.
By incorporating contemporary language teaching approaches, digital learning environments, and innovative educational technologies into our programmes, we provide an engaging, interactive, and learner-centred educational experience. We also employ a range of assessment practices to monitor students' language development and support their learning progress.
Internationalisation and Intercultural Engagement
We believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of discovering, understanding, and engaging with different cultures. Accordingly, we place particular emphasis on developing students' intercultural communication skills, broadening their perspectives, and preparing them to participate in international academic environments.
Through international collaborations, student exchange opportunities, cultural events, and extracurricular learning activities, we encourage students to use foreign languages beyond the classroom. Events such as the Intercultural Day bring together students from different countries and cultural backgrounds, contributing to an inclusive and multicultural learning environment.
Innovative Education and International Language Certification
The School continuously follows scientific and technological developments in foreign language education and seeks to integrate innovative practices into its teaching and learning processes. Digital learning tools, artificial intelligence-supported applications, and extracurricular activities that promote active student participation constitute important elements of our educational approach.
In addition, the School serves as an examination centre for international language assessments, offering Cambridge Linguaskill and Oxford Test of English examinations. Through these activities, we provide students and other candidates seeking to certify their language proficiency with access to internationally recognised language assessment opportunities.
Looking Ahead
As the School of Foreign Languages at Ondokuz Mayıs University, we aspire to be a leading institution that continuously enhances the quality of foreign language education, embraces innovation, integrates emerging technologies into teaching and learning, and promotes internationalisation and intercultural understanding.
Guided by our motto, “Beyond Language. Beyond Boundaries.”, we aim to empower our students not only with strong language skills but also with the critical thinking, intercultural awareness, creativity, and global perspectives needed to thrive in an interconnected world. We believe that language learning goes beyond acquiring linguistic competence; it opens doors to new ideas, cultures, opportunities, and possibilities.
