In today’s world, intercultural communication has gained more importance when compared to the past. In regard to this fact, Ondokuz Mayis University Department of Translation and Interpreting trains translators and interpreters so as to establish effective communication between societies. The Department consists of three undergraduate programs with different language pairs: English-Turkish, German-Turkish and Arabic-Turkish. Translation and Interpreting undergraduate programs aim to train professional translators and interpreters who can meet the communication requirements in an international platform.
Within the scope of undergraduate programs, various courses are offered for the improvement of linguistic skills in foreign languages; the objective of the courses is to achieve mastery in foreign languages. In addition, the programs include innovative courses in Turkish so as to ensure effective use of native language. Thus, future translators and interpreters have opportunity to specialize in both of the languages used in translation process.
The curriculum provides students with necessary information in current issues and cultural studies in order to meet the needs of developing societies. Translators and interpreters gain competences in various areas such as medicine, law, economics, literature and press by means of the courses focused on specific fields. The programs enhanced by elective language courses aim to train well-educated translators and interpreters in all aspects. Internship programs give students the opportunity to observe workplace environments within the framework of their education.
Well-educated translators and interpreters graduating from the Department of Translation and Interpreting may decide to work in various government agencies, institutions of European Union, translation companies, private companies or universities, or they may actively participate in translation and interpreting sector by founding their own translation companies.
